Yes it's that kind of fact that might suggest collusion Petroleum-builders-State ... as the abandonment of the most promising prototypes (Citroën ECO2000 in 1983 who was ... 3L / 100). ..
The Citroën ECO2000
VERA and Peugeot
1 from 1981 305 based VERA
2 from 1985 309 based VERA
were very easily industrialized ... but the technological leap was not made for political economic reasons I mentioned above ...

We know making cars consuming less 3L / 100, we know, but do not do ...

Not bad the photos! I did not even know the VERA
By cons I bcp having difficulty in finding accurate information on ECO2000 (the only one I know) ... you seem to be well informed you could tell us more? (Another subject can be? One by car or manufacturer?)

In terms of manufacturers research, there was also EVE and Renault VESTA (less than 3l / 100)
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_VESTA_2
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renault_VESTA_2
Vesta II will have no direct descendants in the Renault range
...
The Automobile Journalists have believed in the early years 1990 the minicitadine intended to be inserted in the Clio would build the Vesta research program. It will not happen, and the Twingo will have no special economic claims in consumption. It does not benefit from aerodynamic sought

Unfortunately my memory fails me and my records are not what they were ...
I have always been more passionate about demonstrators (near-series vehicles) than for showcars (design studies).
The ECO2000 rather part of showcars and was not really in the style point of view (as most of the time vehicles).
In fact the VERA take advantage of the technological minimum of the time and optimize it by aerodynamics, economy of material and equipment. At the time, the fashionable slogan was "the hunt for GASPI".

I was not very big at the time of EVE, but that's a proto registered on base R18 who traveled thousands of kilometers on the road, according to the newspapers of the time (1978).
The R25s among others, have inherited some advances due to EVE: spoiler, tailgate "bubble" ... The flat / full hubcaps have been abandoned for marketing reasons: the perforated rims are more "aggressive".

These photos remind me of some old Hors Series S&V ...
But it is true that little remains of the solutions of the time ...
The dishes trims (I saved the 0,5L 100 for putting on a R5 6CV company)
aerodynamic wheel arches, tires purposes, the spoiler which come down more or less depending on the speed (Ford Sierra)
engines under 100 cv (R18TL Break 64 cv barely, today some smart are more powerful)
Logan, with nearly a million sales, shows that a share of consumers are beginning to lean towards lowering the benefits of their car.
What good is it to have a lounge on wheels?
When is the clamping motors 100cv like motorcycles?
You can always rein in 100cv and have more torque motors for towing ...
And if some want to show off, they will always have cars handmade leather cowhide etc etc, but clamped ...

The clamping of motorcycles 100cv exists for security reasons, insurance or tax! Certainly not for ecological reasons!
And 100cv on a motorcycle, it moves still very strong to me it seems!?! (Ratio weight / power).
But I rejoinds you still on that idea!
Anyway, there are lots of reasons not to need a lot of horses: pollution, radar, traffic increasingly dense ...
