Ok I will force the use of SSL / HTTPS for all that is sensitive:
a) Registration
b) Member Profile: This includes editing your profile and sending PM
c) Moderation panel
d) Secure cookies
You see other things to encrypt?
New forum to come, what do you want as functions?

I think that put all the forum in HTTPS will be a problem nest
I'm afraid it's slowing down access to forum for those with limited flow connections
I'm sure it will limit access to those who have old computers and old software
it would be a shame that a forum econological participates in the obsolescence of software with unnecessary complication

Ok a good reason more not to put in HTTPS completely then ...
But if I follow you: I should not do it for registration?

I think we should not look for complications
le forum current has never been in https, and has there ever been fraud in the registration?
I think that the inscription should be as simple as possible: if there is the slightest bug to the inscription it is a future member of lost, because he will not even know how to complain
calamity is the spammer robots! and the HTTPS will not do anything against
I am studying the trick on http://forums.phpbb-fr.com/ my preferred solution is to simplify the registration to the maximum, no anti robo, but to put the new registrant in a group with limited permission until a first message shows that he is not a robot

Yes the group is included by default ... and we can limit the messages of the new members.
This is not only about robots but also clever spammers ...
I have not yet thoroughly delved into this detail but I think that we can forbid new members to put an external link before he has posted X messages ... or to contact the other members in MP.
Otherwise there is a lot of anti bot extension, some should work well anyway ... I test some there ...

the number of messages is not the right criterion to pass the new registrants of the group right limited to the normal group ... it would have the effect to prohibit the new to put interressant links and it does not generate the spammer who would quickly to make enough message
I just think that anti robot things should not complicated the registration
we must be able to register easily and quickly to have access to the function facilitating reading: see the unread messages ... get rid of the ad
then it remains to invent an anti robo test to have access to the complete function of the forum
I think for example a private message automatically sent to the new member and the test anti robo would be in this private message: it is necessary to answer correctly this message to pass in the normal group
there are sites that put up anti-robo issues a little anti new
http://microtech59.com/viewsujet.php?f=26&t=1899
I even saw worse: a forum in english on CAD software putting an anti robo asking a question in English very subtle, impossible to understand for someone who speaks only technical English

For those who bring the mustard to the nose: there's a very simple thing, it's messages subject to "probation" ...
Most of the "cores of forums"have it. It saves the modos tedious hours of having to check what is happening on the forum [we can not look everywhere], so the iceberg is made up of those who are already members (in principle without any problem) VS newcomers whose only messages are put on probation.
Afterwards, as the attendance increases, it is still time to revise the operating mode ... In the meantime, it is even possible to put back on probation members who would have gone through the cracks!
There is only Maille that mesh

since you talk about extension it smells phpbb 3.1
and I see interresting extension:
allow editing of the first message even if the following message editing is limited to a certain time http://forums.phpbb-fr.com/extensions-r ... 06261.html
it allows the author to modify the title to make it more meaningful of the evolution of the subject
it also allows to update in this first message links to the most interesting messages
other extension that I'm looking for: trick to go to the page you want by typing the number on the keyboard, as we see on this forum http://forum.scienceamusante.net/viewforum.php?f=5
(arrow in an arc)

I'm not for self publishing titles and long-term messages ... open to all abuse ...
I remember a topic that had been completely rotted because a member had decided to erase all his posts from months later on a whim!
Moderation can do it on a case-by-case basis.
The limit of a few hours is sufficient for the author to correct eventually.
