Recently, at the bicycle festival in Tours, an exhibitor proposed free engraving of the frame and recording on a national file.
In fact, it doesn't really deter the potential thief, but it makes it easy to find the owner once the bike is left in the plan by the thief.
It seems that this has improved the return rate by more than 40% in the countries that have adopted it on a large scale (I have not checked these data).

you still have to steal the entire bike.
I lived 8 years in Marseille, the bike I ended up giving up (note the car was not better !!!). the bike was in the staircase (it did not go down the staircase and could not go home) in the morning I missed a wheel, or the handlebars or a pedal, the saddle ..... and the car? drop it I was stolen as a spare part !!!!
I was robbed once of the battery and the candles, the next day a seat, a wheel, the steering wheel (VERY GOOD !!! it's funny in the morning I tell you!). I never closed it so I wouldn't have to put in new locks three times a week
10 after that makes me laugh
at the time .... ... blah ....
