Fuel ED95: 95% bioethanol for diesel!

Buses and coaches can run on bioethanol 95

16 Feb 2016 enerzine

The Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy published on February 4, 2016 a decree relating to the list of fuels authorized in France including ED95.

ED95 is a fuel intended mainly for buses and coaches and for the transport of goods, which contains 95% of bioethanol and 5% of non-petroleum additive. This dedicated fuel makes it possible to benefit from all the advantages of bioethanol in suitable compression-ignition engines.

Reduce the environmental footprint of public transport

ED95 is a fuel which makes it possible to reduce CO50 emissions by more than 2% compared to diesel thanks to the renewable nature of bioethanol and by more than 70% the number of particulate emissions compared to the limit authorized by the standard. EURO 6.

While local authorities are actively seeking more environmentally friendly solutions to renew their fleets of public transport vehicles, the authorization of the ED95 offers a real alternative immediately available. The Mayor of Paris set an example during COP21 during the “Summit of Local Elected Representatives for the Climate”, by transporting elected officials from all over the world in the “climate bus” built by Scania and equipped with an engine running at the ED95.

A satisfaction from the French bioethanol sector

“We are pleased with the publication of this decree authorizing the new ED95 fuel to make bus and coach transport cleaner. We are ready to support the development of this new market in France, ”said Bruno Hot, president of the SNPAA (National Union of Agricultural Alcohol Producers).

“The authorization in France of ED95, which has existed for a long time in Sweden, opens up new outlets for our agricultural production. We are very satisfied that the French administration allows local authorities to adopt fuels from the biomass that our farmers produce in France "commented Eric Lainé, president of the General Confederation of Beet Planters.

Interesting (for that I have divided to make it a new subject)!

Can we find out more? Technical sheet?

Cetane number? Fire point?
Nature of the additive (anti detonator)?
Comparative consumption and pollution with fuel oil or CNG?

Well this one we already know: starting from sugar beets the overall balance fluctuates between slightly positive and slightly negative compared to the gray energy required ... But hey, you have to please the sugar lobbies to sell the agricultural overproduction ... which itself comes from the overuse of petro-chemical input ...

In the end, it is the oil and chemical industries that win ... Certainly much more than the environment!

So this on the point of CO2 / primary energy savings, I think that ED95 fuel is not far from E85: not terrible!

This does not prevent it from being interesting ... from a motorist point of view! Hence my questions ...

Well there must be some work to adapt a diesel engine to this product ...
The density sticks with that of diesel ... On the other hand the flash point at 10 ° C ... Instead of 56 ...
On the other hand, according to the decree of the Minister for the ecology of sustainable development and energy, it may only be used in professional fleets with specific supply logistics and their own storage capacities. .

Brief like the B30 (30% biodiesel) currently

OUPS .... To make ethannol by compression it is necessary to compress it naughty ... (source scania.fr)

This new 280 hp bioethanol engine is built from Scania's well-known 9-liter diesel engine. It operates on the principle of compression ignition, which implies that the modifications to be made to the engine are not significant.
The most significant changes relate to the fuel injection system and the compression ratio, which increases from 17: 1 to 28: 1. The after-treatment system is based on selective catalytic reduction (SCR), which Scania is using on more and more Euro 6 engines.

Yes indeed,

a compression rate of 28 is quite huge ... you really need good mechanics behind it ... and it must increase friction, so degrade the performance mechanical of the motor !

The thermodynamic efficiency is favored by this record compression rate ... Does it burn well: combustion efficiency to be seen.

For ecological yield ... it all depends on the way to cultivate, of course, and also always the problem of ethanol from the sugar industry, therefore in competition with the diet of men (and women) : Oops: ).

Yes ethanol (pure) has an octane rate greater than 120 from memory ... so the 5% additives are there to necessarily "compensate" for this ... thank you for the .pdf just amazing that we have not the cetane number, it is still the most important characteristic of diesel type fuels ...

The higher the compression ratio, the better the thermodynamic efficiency of the engine ...

yeah but we are finally far from Diesel! It's more of a gasoline engine using auto-ignition ... a kind of gasoline hybrid with the mechanics / injection of a Diesel. it could join the unconventional HCCI combustions (High charged compression ignition), and also the "Diesotto" that Mercedes developed in memories ...
