Let us first agree on the terms:

- we speak of direct sowing (which I call "sowing" or "sowing") when a seed is planted in the place where the plant will develop

- we speak of seedlings when we sow in one place and these plants are then planted elsewhere, once they have reached sufficient size and development; with two possibilities: a) "bare root" plants - the plants can then be prepared in a "terrine", a kind of "container" with soil from inside or in the vegetable garden; b) plants in "pots" or "pots", with two more possibilities, the plastic pots which one collects after having deposited the plant or the pots in compressed "lost" peat, which the roots cross - one then plants with the pot, dui decomposes (we pull, we "dress" and replant elsewhere - see my last video).

The majority of vegetables live with both! Except carrots, for example, which do not support being transplanted. There may be some other root vegetables that escape me at the moment.

The plantation allows to prepare the plants in controlled conditions: greenhouse, mini-greenhouse, glazed frame, veranda, see the window in the house ... So to anticipate! To save time, even if the transplant creates a small shock that makes it lose a little ...

Direct seeding minimizes the work: the "minimum" to be done.

Often, we can "combine" the two: sow a row of salad, which will rise, generally too abundantly; we can therefore "demarcate" to replant further, or cabbages, leeks, onions sown ... But sometimes, the roots are too fragile, and it does not work or not well: beans ...

The "Potager du Laesseux" does not call into question classic or conventional practices ... With the following adaptations:

- the soil stays cooler and wetter longer in spring; for the "first" vegetables, the preparation of seedlings and planting make it possible not to waste too much time; it also allows to have stronger plants, less sensitive to slugs, more present at that time while their predators (beetles for example) are still cold!

- then, since laziness is a rule, we will tend to use the "direct sowing" mode; it will work just as well and we have less to do ...

Hello, I am really new to organic farming, but I would like to try after seeing the videos on Didier Helmstetter's lazy kitchen garden. I think I know the answer but if I put hay now es that it will be too late or not for the planting of this year?

Becoming a lazy gardener sometimes requires a little effort: the answer is the one asked at the beginning of this thread ... I answered it.

Thank you for this answer very clearly,
From what you tell me I see more advantages to start in buckets (obviously for carrots), first to consolidate the plants and also to avoid furrows ..
So by the end of March I'm going to .. if the weather has warmed up ..
Again thank you for your advice, your explanations and your patiences .. all these qualities encourage novices and help to defuse the difficulties of demystifying the subject .. although we will never overcome the complexity of natural phenomena ..

Begins to think about it at the beginning of March, rather - to appreciate according to the weather.

And we learn every day (except to age early). Me first! (I mean I'm learning - I hope I do not age too much and too early, already that naturally, it goes quickly from a certain age!)

So yes, we have to go. Yes, we risk failure! Like any child who tries to walk one day after watching his parents, his brothers ... If he were prevented, on the grounds that it is likely that he will break his mouth, we would not be numerous on both legs ! So yes, try to risk failure. As long as you observe, think and do better! That is to say: to learn! Let's stay a little child !!!

Completely agree with you, learning has become so formalized that we forget the first and fundamentally empirical elan of childhood ..

Didier,
I'm going to bother you a little bit ..
Regarding the preparation of seedlings in pots, I realize that there are several sizes .. and the also I am lost .. what size should I use and for what seeds .. ??

I use diameter 60 mm or 80 mm, for round pots, or also square jars (purchased plants), there also 60 side or 80 side.

For plants that will be developed enough at the facility (tomatoes, eggplants, for example), rather 80. For others (cabbages, salads, parsley ...), the 60 is enough.

More and more, as and when shopping, I will go to plates such as: http://www.magellan-bio.fr/produit_plaq ... oCOBbw_wcB

(I'm looking for durable plates, so strong)

But this is not determinative. Nature will forgive you mistakes!

Hello Didier
What do you think of this type of plate?
