What is widely used and very practical are the washing machine drums: ventilated, but sheltered from rodents; the door is even integrated and everything is made of stainless steel, therefore resistant and durable (in addition it's free, it's almost too good!) : Wink: 8)

One of the silos is a "blue" ("food") keg that I don't know where it comes from, like this: https://www.amazon.fr/fut-plastique/s?i ... 0plastique

The other was an Omniumplastic bin with a broken lid. We buried him and bought a trash can ...

It is not the container that is important! It is the content: mixture of vegetables and soil neither too dry (otherwise your vegetables lose water and wilt) nor too wet (otherwise, soft rots).

Washing machine drums are fine - see Emaüs. [edit: ah, I see Ahmed's message - toasted; but it's confirmed!]

I don't get too much ... :)

a buried bin, whose lid is ruined, it's not waterproof ...

ditto a washing machine drum, it's full of holes ...

and therefore the rains in autumn will make the sand too wet and cause the vegetables to rot ???

The advantage of the holes in the drum is precisely to avoid water stagnation: it is not a problem that rain temporarily increases the humidity as long as the drainage can restore things *. In a sealed system, all you need to do is get the right amount of water to keep it that way ... and a damn cover can easily be replaced by a "roof" that does not allow water to infiltrate.

* Which excludes the implantation of the drum in a clay hole!

1) The trash can is like the keg; I put a plywood on it, then hay (plywood to block rodents ...

2) You must also choose a drained place, not where the water stagnates.

thank you for these details, to start I will use an old keg that I have at home (and which is waterproof from waterproof!), it is this model of 30 l that we find in the Bauhaus in Germany https://www.bauhaus.info/sonstige-garte ... p/16125460

Other vegetables are "lacto-fermented" elsewhere ...

but yes!
it is strange that our traditions have only retained cabbage for this means of conservation.
this is one of the things i really want to try one of these days.
take a look at the nicrunicuit site:

Well, sometimes the "tastes" are strong! Not at all in the style of our sanitized kitchens ... Sometimes, moreover, it is quite terrible when cooking and much less with a fork - result: we are "disgusted" before sitting down to the table!

this is the case of sauerkraut: the taste has little to do with the taste of cabbage.

It gets tougher with salty turnips! No need to ask what's going to be eaten - even if you're in the toilet!

Cooking is hard, the smell everywhere. We plant the first fork with a little hesitation ... and surprise, it's "quite soft" and melting!
