Record-Breaking Cost Reduction for Concentrated Solar Power Generation
June 7, 2017 evwind
The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced on 4 the fourth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park. The lowest bid for the Solar Thermal Electricity (STE) project in 200 US cents / kWh (approx 9.45 € cts / kWh). Participating consortia were [ACWA Power (Saudi Arabia), Shanghai Electric (China), BrightSource (USA)]; [Alfanar (Saudi Arabia), Suncan (China)]; [Engie (France), SolarReserve (USA), Power China (China), Sepco8.4 (China)] and [Masdar (UAE), EDF (France), Abengoa (Spain), Harbin Electric (China)].
Although DEWA will announce the winner in one month, following its assessment of last technical and economic features, a first key aspect is that three of the best bids offered by multi-national players are hitting or even below 10 € cts / kWh while the installed capacity in STE is better than 5 GW compared to nearly 500 GW for wind and 300 GW for PV. In other words, STE costs were divided by 3 in just 10 years (2007-2017) with just 1% of the market volume for wind and less than 2% of the market volume of PV!
This comes already after SolarReserve offered 6.54 US cts / kWh in Chile in August 2016 for a STE 120-MW plant, where in addition to the best solar resource in the world, the country's stable financial status along with US dollar denominated power contracts results excellent financing and investment terms.

Israel: a solar tower of more than 200 m built in the desert
the 12 September 2016
The concrete of the solar tower of Ashalim began to be sunk at the end of June 2016. The operation is expected to continue until November. Commissioning of the plant is planned for 2017.
A thermodynamic solar power plant is currently being built in the Negev, a desert region in southern Israel. It will consist of tens of thousands of mirrors and the tallest solar tower ever built. Presentation.
55 000 heliostats concentrating solar radiation
The Ashalim thermodynamic plant will consist of 55 000 mirrors covering an area of almost 300 hectares, equivalent to more than 400 football fields. These mirrors, called "heliostats", will follow the course of the sun by reflecting and concentrating the radiation towards the top of a tower of 240 meters high, which should make it the tallest solar tower in the world at the end of its construction. planned end 2017.

"Our plant is based on concentrated solar energy technology. We have 50.000 mirrors, called heliostats, concentrated on a surface of one million square meters, which reflect sunlight on the solar tower. This solar tower, which will 250 meters high, will be the highest in the world. There will be a boiler at the end, which will collect the sun's rays and convert the hot water into steam, which will then turn a turbine like a conventional power station ", explains Eran Gartner CEO of Megalim Power Ltd.
This solar thermal power plant could be finalized at the end of this year or beginning 2018. Engineers aim for a daily production of 310 megawatts, enough to power a city of 130.000 inhabitants, about 1% of the country's electricity. Cost of this pharaonic project: about 500 million euros. The engineers had to build a tower adapted to the characteristics of the solar field
"The reason why our tour is the highest in the world is due, not because we want to break records, but because of the density of the solar field. The more heliostats are concentrated, the higher the tower must be so that there are no interferences between the rows of mirrors. The State of Israel wanted us to use as much land as possible, in terms of electricity per unit of land, which is why the tower must reach that height, "explains Eran Gartner.

The solar tower of Ashalim will dethrone that of California, high of 137 meters.

Re: Concentrated Solar Thermal Power Plants
Super!
Two remarks:
a) Why are there mirrors all over the peripheral circle? Israel is still quite far from the equator ...
b) The cost is not so big (another 2 ballistic journalist): 500 millions for 310 MW this is a cost of 1600 € / kW installed, it is 2 3 times less than the EPR of Areva (ah ah ah but here Euronews attacks it less ...) and probably similar to a modern coal smelter (even less I think) ... and finally we are on the same wholesale price of the kWp installed solar photovoltaic ... but with a higher load factor!

SolarReserve Signs Agreement with South Australian Government for 150 Megawatt Concentrated Solar Power Project with Energy Storage
August 15, 2017 evwind
Jay Weatherill has announced that he has secured the weather for the first time in South Australia.
Mr Weatherill said the Aurora Solar Energy Project would be ready to go 2020 and would supply 100 per cent of the State Government's needs.
The Government will pay a maximum of $ 78 per megawatt hour.
Mr Weatherill said the solar thermal plant was "the biggest of its kind in the world".
"Importantly, this project will deliver more than 700 jobs, with requirements for local workers," he said.
In September 2016, the Government launched a tender process to provide 75 per cent of its long-term power supply.
It is said to be attractive to the market and to the market.
The Government contract with United States Solar Reserve operator will last for 20 years, and was the "lowest cost option" of shortlisted bids for the project.
The maximum Government load is 125MW, meaning the plant will be able to supply customers.
The first of its kind in Australia, the Aurora Solar Energy Project will use SolarReserve's leading solar thermal technology with integrated molten salt energy storage.
SolarReserve has signed a long-term Project Generation Agreement (GPA) to build a 150 megawatt solar thermal power station with 8 hours of energy storage near the town of Port Augusta, South Australia. The GPA with the State Government of South Australia was signed today at a ceremony with Jay Weatherill, Premier of South Australia, and Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis.

The solar tower will peak at 240m. It's going to blow up the existing 137m record in California.
The tallest solar tower in the world rises in the Israeli desert
When it enters service at the end of 2017, the Ashalim Tower will reach a height of 240 meters and will be visible for dozens of kilometers around in the rocky desert of southern Israel, at its feet a field of 300 hectares --l 'equivalent of over 400 football fields - mirrors that will redirect the sun's rays to the top of the tower in a part called the "cauldron" and which from a distance looks like a giant light bulb. The cauldron, whose temperature will reach 600 degrees Celsius, will generate steam which will then be channeled to the foot of the tower where the electricity will be produced. This tower should provide 2% of the country's electricity (121 megawatts), or the equivalent of the consumption of a city of 110.000 households. The site, the cost of which is estimated at 500 million euros, is financed by the American group General Electric, which has bought the energy division of French Alstom, and by the private Israeli investment fund Noy.

Re: Re:
Morocco: Engie, EDF and Acwa have already submitted their proposals for the Noor Midelt project
Ecofin Agency 17 Jan 2018
French energy companies Engie SA and EDF Energies Nouvelles, as well as Emirati Acwa Power International have already submitted their technical proposals for the implementation of the Noor Midelt solar project, with a capacity of 800 MW, in Morocco. This was revealed by Obaid Amrane, an official of the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy. Acwa Power and Engie confirmed the information, while EDF Energies Nouvelles declined to comment.
The project consists of two solar plants with a capacity of 400 MW each, whose construction is expected to start towards the end of the current year and last two and a half years, reports Bloomberg. Mr. Amrane also revealed that development banks are ready to finance infrastructure and the sale of bonds to fund projects is also included in the options.
Recall that Morocco has set a goal to increase the share of renewable in its energy mix 40%, by the end of the decade. This involves the construction of renewable energy plants, with a global capacity of 6 GW, by 2020.
