"Medical" iodine is a non-radioactive substitute for iodine-131 which is generally emitted by poorly contained fission products.

Taking iodine medical is decided by the authorities in the event of pollution with iodine 131. After everyone does what he wants at home ...

It is intended to saturate the thyroid with non-radioactive iodine, so that "no" iodine-131 does not implant and radiate there to trigger cancer.

Since I don't know exactly what smokes in Marcoule ... Normally, this is low and medium activity waste, so the iodine tablets are probably useless for this accident.

Yes, but in the case of waste there is no longer any real reaction ...
Radioactive iodine occurs when a reactor malfunctions ...

As I said and remundo said again: we don't know what exactly there is in the case of waste or rather if we know (well they know).

What we do know is that, a priori, there is no more nuclear reaction and therefore no more formation of new radionuclides ...

Old radionuclides are radioactive with complex chains, some of which also produce iodine, to be seen, but it is very complex with huge tables of radioactive chains !!!!!

So if the radioactivity is strong at tens of km, it is advisable to react quickly before the radioactive cloud has passed by giving iodine which saturates the thyroid to children and fetuses, if the authorities react too slowly compared to the cloud (if mistral 50 to 100Km / h so delay a few minutes, not far !!!).

Almost impossible !!!

Hello,
Maybe you think that we were not touched by the cloud of Fukushima?
it is, like that of Chernobil, stopped at the border, On the other hand that of Marcoule will stay in France! : Mrgreen: : Mrgreen:
Don't worry, for cancer etc we still have some for a while : Cry:
And unfortunately, I think we are not at all close to going out of nuclear power, it lacks a huge awareness, for example, young people (like me) do not care and continue to waste who better the electricity ! : Evil:
For example "econology" is a notion absent from the brains of young people !!
What to do??????
HELP !!!!

How old are you?

On Marcoule there was no leak ... officially.
If there had been one, the Criirad would already be on it right?

One of the few fairly complete articles on the accident: http://www.enviro2b.com/2011/09/13/lacc ... nucleaire/

Uh 20 years why?
In the aftermath of yesterday's fatal accident at the Marcoule nuclear site, EDF wants to be reassuring today. "There was no chemical or radioactive release" and "there is no risk of future release" assures the French electrician,

How can we be sure of such a stupid statement about an accident in a nuclear waste reprocessing plant, which is also issued by EDF !!
In my opinion it is as if Total published an article saying that in fact we should not worry, CO2 is very good for health.
and we know very well that the press is controlled, it is important not to "wake up" the population on this subject. finally I want to say that as long as this kind of accident is abroad, all is well.

Yes, well, there is a moment you have to trust a minimum anyway ...
a fire on an oven that melts low and intermediate level waste is not an explosion on nuclear fuel either. It's not surprising that there is no radioactive leak.
There is so much confirmed aspect of the lack of interest and the danger of the production of electricity via nuclear power, I don't know if it is of any use to waste time with this kind of accident ... The day or there will be something a little more serious, I think that even if the info will be controlled, by being attentive, we will be able to know that something is really happening ... in my opinion, perhaps naive .

Nothing to do (directly) with Marcoulle but I didn't want to open a new subject:

Mysterious traces of iodine 131 detected in the air in France

Mysterious releases of radioactive iodine, too weak to constitute a danger, were detected in the air in France from an unknown foreign country, announced Tuesday the Institute of Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN), calling the culprit to denounce himself and the European countries to cooperate to unmask him.

IRSN was alerted last week by its "scientific network" to traces of iodine-131 in the air in several central European countries. He in turn launched a wave of analyzes, the first results of which show very low levels of radioactive iodine concentration in the northern half of France.
Click here to find out more!

"UNUSUAL PRESENCE"

A presence "quite unusual" but "without any risk for the health of the populations" because not exceeding a few microBécquerels per cubic meter, assures the Institute which nevertheless immediately set out on the trail of these abnormal releases to go up at their source.

Only one thing was certain on Tuesday: the Fukushima facilities, victims of a serious accident in March, are out of the question. Iodine-131 has a very short lifespan - its radioactivity decreases by half every eight days - and the event is "too old and too distant", explained Didier Champion, director of the environment and intervention at IRSN. “In addition, we looked at the trajectories of the air and it should have been detected in North America if it had happened in Japan, so this track is excluded today,” he adds.

TO GO BACK IN TIME

The starting point for the investigations, the alert launched on November 11 by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on the presence of iodine-131 in the atmosphere in the Czech Republic, then the announcement of neighboring countries (Poland , Austria and Slovakia in particular) having observed the same contamination over their territory. All this "suggests that the rejection would rather come from Central Europe or a little further," Didier Champion analyzes.

Hungary, Slovenia or even the Czech Republic? All have nuclear installations but it is today impossible "to target such and such a country", insists the expert. "Ideally, the country where the rejection occurred should declare the event, notably to the IAEA, which, to my knowledge, has not been done," he said.

If the culprit does not come forward, it would then be necessary for all the countries which observed this episode of contamination to publish their results to pool them and thus trace the path of the polluted air masses. Because "by going back in time", scientists can determine the territories crossed by this radioactive air and "see if nuclear activities are located under these trajectories", explains Mr. Champion.

DETERMINE THE NATURE OF THE INCIDENT

The French experts would also like to know the nature of the incident which led to such contamination, which certainly does not constitute "a threat at the scale of Europe but can be a problem at the local level" for the environment and health. if the dose of radioactivity emitted is high.

A nuclear power plant or a research reactor could be the source of these releases but they produce different types of radioactive substances (cesium, xenon, etc.). However, for the moment, only traces of iodine 131 have been detected. Another avenue: an installation producing radioactive isotopes for medical use, as was the case in Fleurus in Belgium in 2008, says Mr. Champion. Finally, "we can not rule out a malicious rejection" even if "this is not the most likely way", he says.
