According to a study by the Biostatistics and Epidemiology Department of the Institut Gustave Roussy de Villejuif, published this Monday in the European Journal of Public Health, the French drink too much. Alcohol consumption has even caused 49.000 direct deaths in 2009. Explanations in figures.
40%. This is the number of alcohol-related deaths that occur before 65 years, that is, close to 20.000 people who died from alcohol-related illness.
22%. A true plague among young people, alcohol accounts for almost a quarter of the mortality of 15-34 years. A real danger especially on the road. In 2010, among 18-24 years, nearly 4 young people killed on 10 were victims of an accident involving alcohol.
18%. Between 35 and 64 years, alcohol accounts for approximately 20% cause of death, or one in five people. From 65 years, it only represents 7%.
15.000. The leading cause of death, alcohol-related cancers caused 15.000 deaths and outpaced the cardiovascular events that amount to 12.000 in 2009.
13%. Men are the most affected. As proof, its consumption is responsible for 13% of male mortality, much more than in other European countries.
5%. This low rate is the number of alcohol-related deaths among women. Yet France is well ahead of its neighbors, Italy with only 2% and 1% for Denmark.
27 grams. This is the amount of pure alcohol consumed by French per day in one year. That's a little more than two and a half glasses, served in a cafe, drunk every day.
5 grams. This is the rate recommended by researchers to avoid alcohol-related diseases, one and a half drinks a day maximum.
10 centiliters. This quantity of wine already corresponds to 10 grams of pure alcohol, which is twice as much as it is recommended to drink. This also corresponds to 25 or beer or 3 and strong alcohol (whiskey, pastis, gin ...)
50%. The French drink too much but yet their consumption has been halved in 50 years. It was 33 g pure alcohol, per day and per adult in 1994.
