Discussion European Elections - the 7 June 2009 -

by Rulian » 14/05/09, 14:24

Hello everybody

As too few people unfortunately know, the 7 June 2009, we are called to vote to elect our MEPs for the European Parliament in Strasbourg.

A reminder: more than two thirds of our national law is only a transposition of the decisions taken in Strasbourg. This election is therefore of paramount importance, more than any other.

So I run a thread to talk a little about the functioning of the polls, the programs and lists proposed, the election campaign, our respective opinions ... All this.

As a political talking point can quickly turn to vinegar is at ground lows, I invite you to remain calm and moderate in your remarks so that all this is constructive.

It is left for the discussion and especially do not forget to go to vote the 7 June !!

Well, as long as I'm there I start!

I will vote, and to be honest I am a very active campaigner for the Europe-Ecology lists, bringing together the Greens and ecologist personalities (close to Hulot, former leaders of Greenpeace, the Paysanne Confederation, France Nature Environnement, Judge Eva Joly ... etc)

Some links:

Music
The program

Why Europe Ecology, will anyone tell me?

1 - because it's the only party that really talks about the subject of elections: the European project for the next 5 years. The other parties are obsessed with the vote, the presidential elections ... which is totally out of the question.

2 - because it is the party that has best understood the reality of the issues we face: depletion of resources, after oil, warming. And they have serious proposals.

3 - because EuroGreens is the only European political group to have a real political coherence, a real European program (and not a sum of national programs). This makes it a powerful group in the Strasbourg Parliament.

4 - because the right, the center and the socialists ALL supported the ultra-liberal policies of Barroso, whatever the PS or the Modem say. We see the result.

5 - because basically I'm an ecologist.

6 - because I do not believe in the radical option of the diminishing movements which, although I am close to their ideas, refuse the compromise and the pragmatism to really advance the things in the assemblies where everything is decided.

The discussion is launched, to you the studios !!

Well me, you see, I "keep quiet" ...

Indeed, everyone knows (or is supposed to know ...) that the European Parliament has only an advisory role. Also, the real power is in the hands of the European Commission made up of people NAMES and not ELUS ...

Where is Democracy at this level ???

Also, I think that a little more Democracy would not harm in any way at the top of Europe ...

This is the reason why I hesitate to get involved in the "Newropeans" group which militates among others for a re-appropriation of powers by the people through Parliament, and in a much more egalitarian way than at present between the various member states, before voting for some more or less "Econologist" group, knowing that its powers will not weigh heavily against the Commission ...

To know more :
http://www.newropeans.eu/spip.php?article=126&lang=fr ou http://blogs.newropeans.eu/paris/?p=394#more-394

It remains to be seen whether the founders of this group (originally Erasmus ...) will not lock the powers so as to make it a trans-European party served by another elite type ENA or Polythech, it is still point, mainly that makes me hesitate ...

The power of Parliament is insufficient in the face of the commission, I fully agree. However:

1 - It is not only "Newropeans" which militates for a re-appropriation of powers by the peoples. Europe Ecology proposes a correct constituent process, which should be ratified by a single and simultaneous Referendum throughout the EU. This is to make the necessary corrections to the institutions and to relaunch European construction. What could be better ? See pages 66-67 of the program.

2 - we can only vote for Parliament, must do well even if it's not perfect.

And what do the Newropeans offer for strictly institutional aspects? Because there are lots of other files too. And they have colleagues in other countries to advance their project? Because it is to 27 that we change Europe ... There apparently they are only 4 country. It does not take them far ...

What bristles me is that they are usually national political parties (UMP and PS to name only them) ... it should remove this and make real European parties ... Europe Ecology is perhaps the 1er d 'in them?

Ah thin is that the idea of Newropeans?

1 +, + 1, 1 +
I would go even further and say that the national parties have nothing to do with the Europeans ... nor with the municipal ones !!! And thanks for the correction of the link :?

2 - we can only vote for Parliament, must do well even if it's not perfect.

Alas !!!

1 - It is not only "Newropeans" which militates for a re-appropriation of powers by the peoples. Even if I am not an assiduous consumer of traditional media, it is true that I had never heard of Europe Ecology ... so much the campaign is raging !!! Thank you Econology !!! I had stumbled across the Newropean site by chance and thought that it was the only "trans-European" party and, what is more, to campaign for more democracy at European level. So thank you for the info, I will even dig a little before a possible change of shoulder ...

Well that's what I said above.

In the municipalities, however, I do not see what is problematic: it is well on the national territory ... so the national parties have a legitimacy!

Here is the opinion of Hulot on these elections:

Point of view. The crucial issue of the European elections, by Nicolas Hulot, The World, 13 / 05 / 2009

It is about Europe as politics: if we do not take care of her, she takes care of you. Only one example, in France, 80% of environmental legislation comes from Community law. With the approach of the European elections, the interest for this period seems to me inversely proportional to the importance of the crucial role that this political and geographical space can and must play, to leave as little as possible of this crossroads of crises where we are stuck. Whether one is small, pro or anti-European, Europe is a reality on the move that determines and conditions our future, and to ignore it is to surrender without control to one's power and power.

It is in Strasbourg and Brussels that a large part of our future is played out. The responsibility of those we send to represent us is immense. It is in this perimeter that can emerge the premices of a society reconciled with its planet and thus with itself. It is still necessary that those we have elected are not mistaken about the origin of the evil against which we are fighting.

Each must make a rigorous diagnosis to clearly decide whether to change the system or system. If from now on it is the flourishing of the human race which must crystallize all the political decisions and no longer the profit, the accumulation and the always-plus.
At a time when humanity is facing, especially with climate change and the loss of its natural capital that are added to and mingling with other crises, the most critical and complex situation that it has ever known, what answers are offered by And the others ? Are we still in the thickness of the line?

Beyond dogmas and ideological filiations that seem almost indecent to agitate me, so much the major constraints impose in fact a certain radicality in the options, we must be intransigent in our questions and our choices with the approach of these elections. The pyramid of complexity and the gravity of the threats force us not to accommodate ourselves to empty recipes, vulgar corrections of trajectory, solutions thought in perishable molds. We must decondition ourselves and consider immediately that another model is not only possible, but unavoidable.

A central question, is growth the solution or the problem? We meet the limits of the planet. A student of CM1 can understand that, if our appetite increases constantly while our garden is a fixed size, there is no happy ending. Put differently, what is the economic constraint that matters: the size of the trawl or the number of fish remaining?

Is green growth the miracle cure that some people boast about? To be honest, in the state, I doubt it. In the sense that it gives the illusion that one could move the growth on other registers of production and consumption, replace one expansion by another, without reproducing the same effects. How to prosper without growing? The is the ecological equation.
I envy those who see clearly in this opacity and confusion. The only certainty is that our model poisoned with its own toxins and shows a little more every second its obsolescence. I think we have to admit that there are plots of solutions for each other and that the assembly remains to be done. But these fragments are not necessarily where we are waiting for them.

In the face of the unexpected, we must open up to the untruth and admit that, aside from our models and our classic spheres of expression and reflection, there are creative, inventive minds to which we must open ourselves. At the moment when the followers of decay see their argument supported by the reality, is there any alternative between the undergone or not-known decay, as is the current recession, and the led decay, for which I confess for the moment do not see how spontaneously and democratically it could be implemented?
Perhaps the selective double growth of a chosen decay is the ultimate path. A new path where individual renunciation and acquiescence are carried out individually and collectively. Rigorous sorting to mobilize us on the essentials and move from maximum to optimum.

A selection according to the environmental and energy criteria (the load factor of the planet) crossed with a renewed vision of the progress which places the well-being of all the men like first criterion. A humanist arbitration that can give politics its full dimension and which will aggregate dispersed energies.

All this to say that we must distinctly distinguish, in the manifests and programs of each other, those who make the ecological crisis the major constraint. Those who understood that the economic crisis should not reduce the climate crisis, but on the contrary highlight it. Those who think that the common denominator has all our ills is our unfitness to the limit. And that it is up to the public power democratically to fix and enforce these thresholds. Those who have long been convinced that humanity has two emergencies to achieve that condition one another: to preserve and share; in this sense, ecological and solidarity issues are intimately linked. How to share if, tomorrow, the responsibility of the States is summed up to manage an addition of shortages?

By the way, this would compromise the first virtue of Europe, the rooting of peace. The sobriety and the regulation, which go hand in hand, are a requirement of the stratages of peace. All the more reason to return to the nobility of the economy. An economy that changes its compass and assigns more value to the money or goods produced, but also and especially to Man and Nature.
And in this imperative, the weight of Europe is essential and, in Europe, the foundations of desperately ultraliberal, the ambassadors of an economy that protects without concession and distributes equitably are essential. Look for them, they exist!

Nicolas Hulot is president of the Foundation for Nature and Man.

@Christophe

In fact, the municipalities are located on the national territory. The problem is that the stakes of a municipality (management, planning, etc ...) are not of a national nature for the most part ... The divisions between parties at this level should not take place. to be in the measure or one should elect a mayor for the projects which he carries in his program for his city and not for belonging to such or such "bell tower" ... It would be a little like saying that the native parties would no longer need to be insofar as the states are on European territory, for the benefit of trans-European parties ...

As for the text of NH, which I flew diagonally, it seems very good but it does not mention this lack of democracy that I was referring to and which seems to me paramount ... if only to revive the interest of voters

@futurana

If you have not registered on the list of your address, I think it must be possible to vote at the mayor's office of your old, if they did not automatically remove you (which is is quite common, but I'm not sure it's systematic ...)
In any case, no need to try to vote at your new address, there is a time limit between registration and the possibility of voting ... The best would be that you make a phone call to your old and new town hall to know exactly ...

Yes, I made the same remark to myself: don't forget that Hulot is "politically clean" and that he is deeply rooted in the "system" ...

He can not tell the whole truth, nothing but the truth ...
