This subject "Replace? Repair? Do it yourself? [Happy New Year!]"
doesn't include in title in abstraction without any concrete case !!
So there are clear concrete examples !!
This example shows that a software will have some difficulties to define the unpredictable, real ink cartridges !!
Replace? To fix? Do it yourself?

Of course, that cannot be discussed, but I find the solution not very "reliable", in "production situation" (for technical questions I answered you in the other thread) because when YOU MUST deliver a model or a work , you can not afford to have your fingers full ... see to fail the impression !!!
I edited my post to put a link on your thread. But I had to give up because the title which was stuck to you, is not general enough! If you adapt your intro and put:
"Exit consumerism: tips & tricks"
... I will, otherwise it doesn't make sense ...
For the rest I answer in your other thread.

there is no choice between repairing and changing for new! you often have to do both!
anyone who needs a machine that works right away to finish their job has no choice! the only quick and profitable solution is to buy new! but he must not throw away the old machine! he must give it or sell it at a low price to someone who will have the patience to repair it ... and maybe even who can troubleshoot it later thanks to the know-how acquired by repairing this machine
I repair all kinds of things, but it is very difficult to repair a machine when the client is in a hurry: it is much more interesting to recover broken machines and resell them once repaired
when i get a quick fix it’s usually because i had the same kind of machine on hand, and took the time to understand
alas since the orientation of the company does not favor the repair, the know how that I try to have has no value and is not transmitted ... I have the impression of being too alone

Well seen! I add a few cases, we must distinguish between different types of costs in its calculation, direct or variable:
- in travel expenses, the fact is that they are constantly to be taken into account (unless they are included) but variable depending on the distance;
- training costs and / or time;
- indirect costs: installation, and / or essential updating of additional equipment / s;
- the cost of the repair estimate.
- the hourly cost necessary to document itself in the event of repair.
Also to repair. Not everyone has the ability to do it! Depending on the expertise, it can also take more or less time. It is in these cases that very often, calling a repairer, or spending hours finding THE solution, ruins the idea of extending its lifespan.

This is a vast and another debate: what is the "fair" price, the real price?
Ask Ford what he thought ...
Price is one thing, but lying as much about the printing capacity and a factor of 100, it is much more serious ...

My top-of-the-range Bosch dishwasher (AAA category), which has always been quite capricious (it did not always start, the breakdown looked like a false contact), ended up failing 2 months ago.
As an econologist, I operated on him to try to repair it.
The pipes and circuits were very buried.
So I carefully dismantled and cleaned all of this, hoping that the various level and pressure sensors impacted would find the information disturbed.
Without results.
I did not examine the electronic card, no online site gave information on electronic repair.
Finally I was given the address of a reintegration company that repairs household appliances. For 35 € they took charge of my device (quote package). The next day they called me to tell me that the electronic card was flashed and offered me:
- replacement with a new card: 180 €
- replacement with a used card: € 60
I opted for the second-hand card and got my dishwasher the same evening.
Or a total budget of less than € 100.
I don't regret anything, my device is approaching 10 years of service, I hope it will do the same.
Now it works better than before and above all I learned about its proper use and the prevention of breakdowns ...
By the way my neighbor whose dishwasher broke down at the same time (a Turkish model of 3 years of age) bought one immediately (the same, but as it was on sale ...).
Instead of taking it to the recycling center, I took it to the aforementioned repair shop the day I came to pick up mine.
Perhaps he repaired it and put it back on sale (they have very beautiful secondhands) or recovered it for parts.

I have already told the experience with my dishwasher: 5 years and 6 months after its purchase, a leak (not knowing, I had then taken the warranty extension to 5 years!).
Curious, I reverse engineer it in the kitchen. My wife, knowing my legendary curiosity, my post-adolescence which inclines me to dismantle everything, lets me do ...
Finally, I find a bellows connection that had rubbed and had pierced ...
Without top believe it, valuing 12 years of life in Africa, I take an inner tube of bicycle, cutting, fittings embedded in u silicone, gardener necklaces ...
He is 12 years old and still walks!
PS: to be honest, I also dismantled a broken ACER laptop; not knowing it, I obviously freaked out a connector on disassembly; result: it has never been reassembled! (but I recovered the DD and the data!).
PS2: for de-deco and cartridges: if the cartridges were sold at their "fair price" (again, as someone said, would it be necessary, in liberal economy, to define it - in controlled economy, we know what it gives: the plan is to produce 1 million cartridges, but no one can find any, except on the black market), printers would cost more! There, we sell off the printer to catch up on the consumable (this is also the principle of mobile marketing: the iPhone at 59 € when it is worth 500, and then we recover on the package). Having said that, I agree, there is abuse anyway, even if it is a bit more complicated.
