Hello,
If, at the outlet of the condenser, we place an overflow vessel and put an alcohol scale there, we can have almost real-time control of the quality of its alcohol. (the outlet of the overflow vessel going of course towards the container receiving the alcohol, must not be "thrown" as we say!)
These are the instruments of measurement, thermometer (at the top of column) and weighs alcohol which allow to have a control on the quality of what one produces.

Ok but on wikipedia and other sites which I do not remember the source it says:
"you have to cut off the head and tail of the distillation" in other words the first and last drops because the first drops are not ethanol but methanol and the last are less fragrant and less alcoholic.
Where can I get an alcoholometer to find the degree?

Hello, I read all the posts carefully and I pause for a few questions: Methanol! AAAH! As chatelot16 so clearly indicated in a previous post, I quote: "good fermentation should only produce ethanol". Question: How to make a good fermentation!
Another question: How do we know that we arrive at the end of distillation. Because if I understand correctly, do not exceed the 78 °, or in any case do not exceed the 90 ° (If not was the water that we harvest) Is it must wait at 80 ° (about) until there is nothing left?
Another question: I read, a little higher, that we can add yeasts. Which ones?

Hello,
As the distillation progresses, as the alcohol content decreases, the temperature of the vapors will increase at the outlet of the column, so the thermometer will warn the end of the distillation.
Yeasts, it is before the distillation that must be put, in the sweet juice, the brewer's yeast works very well.

voila, I embarked on the realization of a still, hence the "unearthing" of this post ... I took the plans on www.fairesagnole.eu .
Everything was fine until this afternoon: I went looking for the copper elements ... Fatche it's expensive!
And also impossible to find such diameters in DIY stores ... I was able to find the 22mm meter that earned me 16euros. I have to go to a pros shop, it's not a problem.
The problem comes from the 56mm tube that will make my column ... I estimate it well 40euros the m if I extrapolate on the taken 22mm.
- Knowing that I have "only" 150 euros in budget and that I still have to find the boiler, the flanged connection, and all the connections ... I will quickly exceed it!
So all his asked for the following: Can I use an aluminum or stainless steel tube instead? where do you find them and how do you soda-tone (or brash-tone) these materials?

copper is not a good material for a small column it is too good heat conductor
the purpose of the packed column is to allow water vapor to condense and go back down without ever reaching the top: the bottom of the column is therefore hotter than the top
the columns to be distilled in glass and even double-walled chemistry to improve thermal insulation
no need to waste is time to make a small column inefficient copper: as much to be satisfied with a direct connection of the minute coordinate to the coil
copper can be a good material for a very large column
at home the column are made with fluorescent tubes (neon) cut and washed to remove the fluorescent powder ca made of free glass tube: I make the connection with the end of silicone tubes
for the filling on the inside of the column it is a ball of stainless steel chips to clean the pans

A neon like distilate tube !!
There is really interest in stripping the tube well.
When you distill do not forget that the smell of alcohol will smell in all the neighborhood if you are in town ....
Otherwise avoid drinking your beverages directly at the exit of the still ... A good alcohol needs a few years to be really drinkable. Unless you want to burn your stomach with ethers and other crap.

Ok I see! but the fluorescent tube ... not easy to handle and transport! ... what do you think of an aluminum tube cooled up by a coil of PVC tube wrapped around? I only have to include it in the cooling circuit of my condenser!
Would PVC hold heat ??
