States reserving a monopoly on violence therefore tend to limit it as much as possible within the population. On the other hand, violence within the population disrupts the production of abstract value, it is therefore counterproductive vis-à-vis the finality of the state, which is to maximize it. This maximization of abstract value causes a switch from violence between individuals to violence within the economic sphere, "muffled" violence, in the sense that it is not recognized as such. Finally, the most perverse individuals, or simply in psychic suffering, find a powerful derivative of their violent impulses in the exercise of social domination since aggression constitutes both the means and the end of this capacity to harm others. .
As I have already recalled, the investment in market relations appeared to the eyes of certain contemporaries of the wars of religion as a lesser evil (without understanding, of course, all the harmful implications of the process), while acknowledging that the inability of society to coexist in other forms.

We can compare states to individuals, it is for this reason that coalition of states (like the EU) naturally tend to reduce conflicts ... to push them elsewhere or further in time.
In the context of globalization and the appearance of techno-industrial societies, violence can no longer be effectively evacuated onto other human societies (or then onto non-aligned nations), it spills onto the biosphere, it it is a sort of "qualitative leap in violence".

The biosphere has thus accumulated the constraints of our societies since the end of the Second World War, it is a safe bet that the ecological collapse will result in "catching up" in human losses.
